If you’ve been working on your own for any significant amount of time, you’ll know the lifestyle and motivation levels are far different from working for a company. There can be endless opportunities for the self-employed, and just about anyone can make it with a bit of discipline and hard work.

However, having a self-employed lifestyle can be tough. It can be tough not only in a career sense, but also socially, physically, and mentally. Here are a few ways to stay balanced.

  1. Have a routine, and be sure to stick to it. It’s awesome to be able to sleep in every day if you want (as long as no other priorities are making sure you wake up), work only until the work you have currently is done, and work at night one day and in the morning the next. However, this can drastically affect your productivity. Even if you have the discipline to make sure you get done what you need to each day, a non-steady routine can have an effect on your mental and physical health. A healthy circadian rhythm is essential to staying healthy yourself. Also be sure to try to see some daylight hours, as we also need sunlight for our biological well-being. Do so whether it means working during the day and getting out of the house to do so, or simply going on a walk or running errands during the daylight regularly.
  2. Exercise regularly. This is especially important if you are self-employed and work mostly on a computer or do other immobile work otherwise. Staying in shape can give you more energy throughout your work day and leisure time, and can help you stay focused. Not to mention looking good can be a great confidence booster! We’re programmed to be happiest and most efficient with an active lifestyle, so if you’re work requires you to be stationary, be sure to make up for it in your non-working hours.
  3. Be financially stable. If you are living paycheck to paycheck from your self-employment at this point, there’s absolutely no shame in getting a part-time job. If you’re constantly stressing about money, it can hurt your productivity. It can be a easy to find a part-time job only a few days a week, only at nights, etc., at times when you’re not working on your business anyway. Additionally, it can be a great way to keep active, interact with others, and help you keep a steady routine. On top of all this, if you have more lenience financially, you can have more time growing your business rather than just taking on any little job to stay afloat.
  4. Stay organized. Always strive to become a more organized person and to stay organized. If you work from home, having an organized home can keep the stress away and things happening efficiently. With your own business, you’ll need to keep organized in order to improve efficiency as well, which will keep your clients, finances, paperwork, products and everything else in order.
  5. Always harvest new ideas. Be sure to keep your business moving. Without this, you can become bored of your own self-made business. Get creative, and get active. Define the overall goals you have in your business: are you heading there now in the right direction? Think: what are the next 3 baby steps you can take in order to make them happen? Staying motivated is a huge part of being self-employed, and it’s always important to step back at times, re-evaluate goals and dreams, and change or re-align directions.
